St. Dunstan’s Outreach to the Community

The purpose of St. Dunstan’s Outreach Ministry is to build and nurture a community of Christians that spreads the Word of God by ministering to the physical needs of the church family, the surrounding community and the world.

For more information about St. Dunstan's Outreach Programs, call the parish office at (619) 460-6442. If you wish to volunteer for one or more of these programs ask for the Director of Lay Ministries.

RUMMAGE SALE

Almost every year St. Dunstan’s holds a 2-day rummage sale to benefit the many outreach programs supported by the church and our community. This intense ministry activity requires volunteers to serve in the following areas: donations, promotion, transportation for some items, sorting, pricing, set-up crew, clean-up crew, security, cashiers, baggers, persons to run the refreshment stand, etc. $10,000-$12,000 is typically earned, with the proceeds going to our Outreach programs. This is also an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow parishioners.

CASSEROLE MINISTRY

Casseroles are made and delivered to members of the parish, and their families, facing a family emergency. (Contact the Director of Lay Ministries.)

EPISCOPAL COMMUNITY SERVICES (ECS) FOOD PANTRY

A food ingathering is held the first Sunday of each month. The grocery items are taken to the ECS food pantry for distribution to low income families who may otherwise go hungry in order to pay rent and/or utility bills. Brown paper bags are available for your donation of staple goods. Money is also greatly appreciated and used to purchase additional staple goods.

EPISCOPAL COMMUNITY SERVICES (ECS) JULIAN'S ANCHORAGE

St. Dunstan’s helps to fill special needs of the women and children living in this safe haven for battered women.

FISH TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY (East County only)

Volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments for individuals without other transportation means. St. Dunstan’s works with other churches in east San Diego County to recruit volunteer dispatchers and drivers.

ISN (INTERFAITH SHELTER NETWORK) ROTATIONAL SHELTER

Once a year St. Dunstan’s provides shelter, food and transportation during a two week period for men, women and families attempting to get back on their feet. It is part of the faith community’s network to assist the less fortunate in our community. Volunteers are needed to provide evening meals and to spend the night with our shelter guests.

ISN (INTERFAITH SHELTER NETWORK) EL NIDO

St. Dunstan’s furnishes one of the apartments in this complex and helps to meet special needs of the battered women and children living in this safe haven.

TEEN SHELTER

The Metro Teen Shelter provides a safe haven for young teens on the streets. St. Dunstan’s provides the meals for these teens on the first and third Tuesday of each month. In addition, funds are provided to meet some of the special needs of the young residents. Drivers are needed for delivery of the Tuesday meals.

FAMILY OUTREACH

Food is provided to families in need for the Thanksgiving holiday and food and gifts are provided for Christmas celebrations. In addition, St. Dunstan’s supports an annual Angel Tree where a name is selected and an appropriate gift is purchased.

EYE MINISTRY

Eye glasses are collected and delivered to the Lion’s Club.

NATIONAL ASSISTANCE

All Soul’s Episcopal Church, New Orleans Ninth Ward – Donations are made to support renovation of the facilities damaged by hurricane Katrina and for educational programs for children and adults in the community.

Heifer International – Funds are donated to Heifer International for animals that are provided to families to help them become self-reliant. St. Dunstan's donations are ear-marked for use in the United States.

INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ISCRISAT) – In 2006 St. Dunstan’s made a four-year commitment to support ISCRISAT. Donations are used for a pilot project which demonstrates how farmers along the southern edge of the Sahara desert in Africa can survive drought and famine through the planting of three different crop mixes in different micro-climates. The goal is to develop a crop rotation that will allow these people to survive drought years, make a small profit and overcome poverty.
