EL NIDO OUTREACH PROJECT
What is the El Nido Project?El Nido (“The Nest”) is a transitional living program under the umbrella of the Interfaith Shelter Network of the Ecumenical Council of San Diego County that provides housing for battered women and their children. There are 11 apartments sponsored by area churches.
How does El Nido work?Residents are in the program for 12 months with an option to extend for six months. Upon successful completion of the program, the families are allowed to take all bedding, bathroom linens, and kitchen equipment (except for the major appliances), along with other items we think we could easily replace for our next guests like the computer, TV, microwave and some furniture.
How is St. Dunstan’s involved?St. Dunstan’s has been involved with El Nido since its inception over 15 years ago, and sponsors a two-bedroom/one-bath unit. The success of the rummage sale has allowed us to purchase new items for the apartment, in addition to accepting new and gently-used items, along with cash donations from parishioners. We support our guests throughout the year with birthday gifts, Christmas presents and participating in program activities.

Change of Worship Times Part 2 |
Summer Time Change Experiment
King Farouk, the last reigning monarch of Egypt, once said that
there were three kings that would always reign: the king of Heaven,
the King of Spades, and the King of England.
This was before 1952, when he abdicated the
throne and sailed away on his royal yacht, never to return.
He left a broken man: he had desired what he was
not going to achieve: a fifth monarchy that would not end
- his own.
It is difficult for us in the early Twenty-first century
to imagine the pomp and circumstance that surrounded
the English Monarch just a brief half a century ago. There
are some in our congregation who will remember those days. I can remember
the crowning of Elizabeth back in 1952 - and I was only 6.
That made an impression on me! Imagine what it must have been like.

On May 16 the California Supreme Court ruled that
it is a violation of our state constitution to
deny same-sex couples the right to receive
a marriage license in this state. This ruling
paved the way for same-sex marriage to
begin in California on June 16, the day on
which I am writing this article. Religious
leaders in San Diego have responded to this ruling in
different ways: some have welcomed this change, others
believe that we should proceed with caution, and
some have said they will never perform same-sex
weddings. Our own Bishop, the Rt. Rev. James
Mathes, issued a statement on the ruling that you can
read on the diocesan website, under the
“quick links” section at the bottom of the home page.
In that statement, Bishop Mathes wrote these words, “I
support the Supreme Court’s decision and oppose the
likely effort to amend the constitution.”
