Without fail the Mark of Giving induces more emotional responses than all
other Marks combined. Or perhaps it is just my own emotion that I am
experiencing. God has blessed me and has blessed my family in so many ways that
I am always at a loss to know how to respond in kind. No matter what I give back
it never feels like enough.
The Bible is filled with references and guidelines about what God calls us to
do in terms of giving back to Him through tithing, in giving to those in need,
and in supporting the church. There are so many scripture references that could
be quoted here. One in particular, though, speaks to the purpose of our tithes
and offering that also addresses our call to be disciples building Christ’s
kingdom. It comes from Deuteronomy 26:11-13:
“And you and the Levites and the aliens among you shall rejoice in all the
good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household. When you have
finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year
of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the
widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. Then say to the Lord
your God: ‘I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to
the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, according to all you
commanded. I have not turned aside from your commands nor have I forgotten any
of them.'
As His disciples, count all your blessings, then give some back to those in
need: some to St. Dunstan’s and to the Diocese to carry on programs and the
expansion of Christ’s kingdom, and some to strangers to the fatherless, widows
and orphans through ECS or other outreach programs. Through our actions,
attitudes, and ‘recycling’ of the gifts that God has provided us, we bring
others to Jesus Christ and enjoy a closer walk with Him as well!
A final note from 2 Corinthians 9:7 – “Each man should give what he has
decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves
a cheerful giver.”
