One of the most logical, least outwardly obvious, and most underutilized
Marks of Discipleship is a daily practice of Bible Reading and verse
memorization. For nearly fifteen years I was involved in a concentrated Bible
Study as both a member and discussion leader. To complete my responsibilities, I
had to have studied the Word, thoughtfully answered the questions, and been
prepared to lead others in the discussion of what the Word meant to them. It
provided a wonderful structure for me that easily fit within a daily regime. I
learned a lot and can honestly say that every single time we went through a
chapter that I had done before, I found something new to be gained from it.
“All scripture is God breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of
God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The Word of God is lively and challenging, rewarding and
reflective, uplifting and incriminating. As I grow in my relationship with
Christ, the Word grows with me; my perceptions at age 30 were not the same as
those I have now. Yet the truth of the Word has remained constant: I can trust
it to be the unerring message that God has for me, given through the prophets,
and through His Son, Jesus Christ – the best book on psychology, philosophy,
social and cultural integration, and business one could ever hope to read!
If you haven’t gotten into a Bible study or into the use of
a daily study guide, I highly recommend either or both to you. It’s amazing how
the answers to life’s most difficult problems are made clear through prayer and
seeking God’s answers in His Word!
