The Marks of Discipleship
is a scripture-based method to help us achieve our Vision: “To Be Disciples
Building Christ’s Kingdom.” The following is what is meant by our Vision.
“To be” – the act of becoming. When we accept Christ as our Savior we
are on the road to perfection in Him. It is a road that has no end this side of
heaven. The trip, however, can enhance our lives with more joy, greater peace,
better decisions, less stress, and a fuller sense of well-being than any other
path we might consider.
“Disciples” – By Webster’s definition, a disciple is one who accepts
and assists in the spreading of the doctrines of another. Jesus was God’s
disciple: “Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.” (Mark
1:14) Jesus, in turn, calls us to be His disciples: " ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus
said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ " (Mark 1:17)
“Building” – Discipleship is a process of building, not stagnating.
The church of God would not exist at all if the believers did not take the word
to the people. In him the whole building is joined
together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are
being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”
(Ephesians 2:21-22)
“Christ’s Kingdom” – He was with God in
the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made
that has been made.” (John 1:2-3) The entire universe belongs to Christ. Yet God
gave the world over to man and sin so that we could freely choose our
relationship with God. Through the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of His
Son, God has provided a way back to God, overcoming our spiritual death by way
of the cross of Jesus. Christ’s Kingdom, therefore, continues to be a building
process as people accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.
Until Christ returns there will always be those
who need to find Him, be refreshed in Him, be strengthened in Him, be baptized
in Him, and live a life of joy with Him. As Disciples Building Christ’s Kingdom,
therefore, our job is to bring the message of salvation to those who need it, in
and out of the family of St. Dunstan’s.
